The Washington Commanders landed their franchise quarterback in last year’s draft, surging from the dregs of the league to instant an Super Bowl contender.
The goal now should be to build around Jayden Daniels at all costs, with an eye on overtaking the reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East.
Washington has taken some serious steps in that regard this offseason, trading for star wide receiver Deebo Samuel and spending first-round draft capital on Oregon offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. Some glaring needs remain, however, with right guard near the top of the list.
With Sam Cosmi coming off an ACL tear during the NFC Divisional Round, Washington could have a void on the interior offensive line to open the season. Sterling Xie of Pro Football Network predicts the team could address that need by poaching veteran guard Brandon Scherff from the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“The position isn’t exactly a must-add for the Washington Commanders, but none of the current options are ideal,” Xie wrote for PFN. “Brandon Coleman was a left tackle as a rookie and for the majority of his collegiate career at TCU. He’s the frontrunner to start at right guard and has only one college start back in 2021 at the position. Coleman actually has more experience at left guard, where he made 11 starts for the Horned Frogs.
“Signing Scherff wouldn’t necessarily squeeze out Coleman, who could compete with Nick Allegretti to start on the left side. It would raise the floor at right guard for the year if Cosmi isn’t able to return. Given how much Washington has already invested in improving Jayden Daniels’ supporting cast this offseason, it makes sense to ensure the offensive line isn’t shorthanded on the interior.”

Scherff played some of his best football of his career with the Commanders from 2015-22, including a first-team All-Pro nod during his dominant 2021 season. He still has some gas in the tank entering his age-33 season, as he strung together some solid seasons as a pass protector for Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville.
The Jaguars have a new regime that’s looking to retool the roster with younger talent. They’ve already moved on from Scherff, in theory, signing 27-year-old guard Patrick Mekari in free agency.
Spotrac projects Scherff’s market value to be in the range of $6.7 million for one year. That feels like a nice value, as Scherff has the chops to start at right guard while Cosmi works his way back on the field.
