Columbus extending Provorov to $59 million contract

Ivan Provorov will be staying in Ohio. Per insider Elliotte Friedman, the Columbus Blue Jackets are extending Ivan Provorov to a 7 year $8.5 million contract.

This is big for Columbus to lock up a key core piece of their blue line for the long haul. The 28 year old defenseman recorded 7 goals and 26 assists for 33 points in 82 games last season. It was his second season with the club after he was traded there in the 2023 offseason, previously spending 8 years with the Philadelphia Flyers. He has produced a total of 12 goals and 53 assists for 65 points in 164 games during his Columbus tenure so far.

Provorov will be expected to continue to be a consistent top pair defenseman over the course of this contract for the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was a big reason why the team made such a leap in the standings last season, narrowly missing a playoff berth. He and Zach Werenski have proven to be staples of a strong Columbus D core that also includes the likes of vets Damon Severson and Erik Gudbranson. They also have some promising young dmen on the rise such as Denton Mateychuk. The team will likely be competing for a playoff spot next season.

The 10 year veteran has touted 77 goals and 205 assists for 282 points in 696 games throughout the duration of his career. The Russian dman will be 35 by the time this contract expires in 2032.
