Colts QB Anthony Richardson being benched ‘seems likely’ with Daniel Jones looming

Statistically, Daniel Jones may have been the second-worst quarterback in the NFL to see significant time last season. His stats with the Giants were that bad.

But the one QB with a worse rating than Jones? Anthony Richardson.

And now, that duo is duking it out for the starting quarterback job with the Indianapolis Colts.

Colts coach Shane Steichen has already said the duo will get equal reps during the early stages of the offseason. It’s truly an open competition.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell thinks that while Richardson will get the first crack, it’s far from over.

“There are reasons to be optimistic about Jones,” Barnwell writes. “He was miscast as a $40 million quarterback in New York, but he can be an accurate passer in rhythm and should be able to handle Steichen’s RPO calls… Whether through injury or benching, it seems likely Richardson will give way to Jones at some point this season. Jones will have to stay healthy and consistent to keep that opportunity.”

That last sentence might wind up being the most painful part for the Colts. They’ve got two quarterbacks famous for being inconsistent.

Both Richardson and Jones flash immense talent here and there, only to go back to intense mediocrity after that.

“For whatever benefits playing in Minnesota brings, it’s inarguable that Jones has a clearer path to getting on the field in Indianapolis,” Barnwell wrote. “… the Colts hardly seem thrilled with 2023 No. 4 pick Anthony Richardson. He was benched for Joe Flacco last season after briefly asking out of a game. And while his average pass traveled more than 2.0 yards in the air further than any other regular starter, his 47.7% completion percentage was the worst in NFL history after adjusting for era among passers with a minimum of 200 attempts.”

This might be a lost season for the Colts. But the campaign would be a victory if they determine one of these guys is a keeper at quarterback.

Don’t bet on that happening, but never say never.
