Colts place promising rookie on season-ending injured reserve

The Colts could not escape the injury bug in their second preseason game against the Packers.

Of the seven players to suffer an injury, the Colts placed three on season-ending injured reserve, including seventh-round rookie Hunter Wohler.

Wohler had been a standout in both training camp and the two preseason contests before going down with a foot injury in the first quarter against the Packers.

The rookie safety from Wisconsin had recorded 11 total tackles through two preseason games, including a team-leading nine in the preseason opener against the Ravens.

Losing Wohler is a big loss for the Colts, as he had been projected to have a significant role early on as a rotational safety in the box.

According to James Boyd of The Athletic, Wohler’s prognosis looks good. He’s “likely” to undergo Lisfranc surgery on his foot, an injury which several players have come back from successfully.

One of those players, Colts great Dwight Freeney, recorded 10.5 sacks the season following his operation. So Wohler has little reason to sweat, especially after the summer he’s had.

Still, it’s a frustrating blow to the Colts, who will now turn to Daniel Scott, a third-year safety out of California, to be the backup to Nick Cross. While Scott has been in the league a while, he never played an NFL snap until 2025 as he suffered season-ending injuries in both 2023 and 2024.
