Colts could part ways with recent free-agent addition via trade

The Indianapolis Colts made a subtle, yet intriguing addition to the backfield this offseason.

While no one is debating whether Jonathan Taylor is the rightful leader in the backfield, his recent injury history suggests the Colts needed to add some viable depth behind him.

General manager Chris Ballard, entering his ninth season, seemingly agreed with that notion considering the offseason moves he made at the position.

First, the Colts signed veteran Khalil Herbert to a one-year deal worth $1.3 million in free agency. It seemed Herbert was a lock for the backup role until Indy spent a fifth-round pick on Kansas State’s DJ Giddens in the 2025 NFL Draft.

While fifth-round picks don’t often take over backfields, Giddens is a talented player who perhaps fell a bit too far in the draft.

It was enough for Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine to suggest Herbert as a potential trade candidate following the draft.

This kind of transaction wouldn’t come in the form of a blockbuster move. The Colts likely wouldn’t get more than a late Day 3 pick in exchange for Herbert.

With that said, they could pursue that route during the season if Taylor stays healthy and Giddens takes over the backup role.

Herbert is a good depth piece to have on the roster but if the Colts get an intriguing offer, it may be difficult for Ballard to decline.
