Colts’ Anthony Richardson trade decision gains clarity amid rumors, Daniel Jones signing

The Colts have made multiple quarterback moves this offseason.

Indianapolis signed Daniel Jones in free agency, then drafted Riley Leonard out of Notre Dame.

All the while, incumbent starter Anthony Richardson has stayed in place, waiting to know what’s next.

Yahoo’s Frank Schwab provided some new insight on Monday:

“The Colts brought in Daniel Jones to compete with Anthony Richardson, the fourth pick of the 2023 NFL Draft who has not played well enough to be the Colts’ established starter going into year three,” Schwab writes. “The Colts want Richardson to find consistency and win the job. The question, starting with OTAs, is if Richardson responds well to the competition.”

His report indicates the Colts “want” Richardson to win the starting job.

Richardson has an incredible deep ball and is a strong runner, but he’s also mightily inconsistent.

In 2024, he completed just 47.7 percent of his passes, an abhorrent number that wouldn’t have even been great in the NFL’s early passing days.

Indianapolis could move on from Richardson, but the Colts likely wouldn’t recoup much in any kind of trade.

They now have three run-happy QBs, so they can set up a system that works for any of them, unlike last year with the immobile Joe Flacco as backup.

The Colts could have to rebuild again if Richardson doesn’t work out, but it’s probably worth giving him one more preseason to claim the job for good.

Richardson might be injury prone anyway, so this is a two-pronged question to begin with.

But Indianapolis apparently wants their talented youngster to keep the job, and now it’s up to Richardson to do just that.
