Colts’ 2025 offseason workout schedule includes peculiar trend

The Indianapolis Colts officially take another step closer to hitting the field as the offseason schedule has been announced by the NFL.

The majority of teams in the NFL will begin the offseason workout schedule either April 21 or 22, commencing Phase 1 of the program. Teams with new head coaches are permitted to begin offseason workouts a week or two before teams with returning head coaches.

The Colts, coming off their fourth consecutive season without a playoff appearance, find themselves with their backs against the wall. This is especially true for general manager Chris Ballard, who has been given one more chance to right the ship going into his ninth season at the helm.

He’s made some well-regarded moves such as bolstering the secondary with the additions of safety Cam Bynum and cornerback Charvarius Ward. Meanwhile, he signed Daniel Jones to a one-year deal as the main competition for Anthony Richardson.

Here’s a look at the offseason workout schedule for Indianapolis:

Colts 2025 offseason workout schedule

  • April 15: Phase 1 of workouts begin
  • May 28-30: OTAs
  • June 3-5: OTAs
  • June 10-12: Mandatory minicamp

Phase 1 of the program allows solely for workouts and conditioning so they won’t be on the field until Phase 2. Even then, the workouts are very restricted. The Colts will begin getting deeper into the offseason workouts during OTAs, which is the start of Phase 3.

A peculiar trend has taken place over the last few offseasons as it pertains to the Colts. Each team is permitted 10 voluntary sessions of organized team activities (OTA) during Phase 3 of the offseason program. Teams are allowed to use those practice sessions as they see fit.

What’s peculiar about the Colts is that they only have six OTA sessions scheduled, which was the same number as last offseason. They haven’t surpassed that total since the 2023 offseason. For a team with a quarterback that needs as many reps as possible, one might think the Colts would want to use that to their advantage.

There are no pads worn or live contact permitted during the offseason so the non-contact injuries would be the only area of concern from that vantage point. They aren’t the only team with only six OTA sessions, but it’s still a bit odd. There’s no rhyme or reason to these decisions, but it is something of note.

The rookie minicamp date has yet to be announced, but that will take place either the first or second weekend following the 2024 NFL Draft.
