Colts $14 million defender named cut candidate after career-worst season

The Indianapolis Colts defense is expected to undergo some major changes going into the new season.

With Lou Anarumo taking over as defensive coordinator, there are likely going to be some changes to the personnel, especially on the defensive line.

When looking at potential cut candidates this offseason for every NFL team, Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac views defensive tackle Raekwon Davis in that group of players.

“The 27-year-old enters the final season of a 2 year, $14M contract in Indy, set to earn $6.5M in 2025. He posted extremely limited production in just 349 snaps last season, putting his $8.9M cap hit on notice. The Colts can free up $6.5M of space by moving on,” Ginnitti wrote.

The Colts have been searching for depth at the one-technique position ever since Grover Stewart became the starter a few years ago. They haven’t been able to find much success, though, and Davis joins the list of players who failed to make an impact.

Some of it was on the veteran, but he also didn’t get much of a chance to prove himself. Davis played a career-low 30% of the defensive snaps while recording just 15 tackles (seven solo), no quarterback hits and one tackle for loss — all career-worst marks.

The Colts aren’t necessarily strapped for cash entering the offseason. Spotrac currently has them with $31.1 million in salary-cap space, which ranks 18th in the NFL.

Maybe the Colts feel Anarumo’s defense will be a better fit for Davis as it requires interior defenders to take on a two-gap approach. Either way, the Colts could free up a good chunk of change by releasing him.
