
In the offseason, the Dallas Cowboys made the decision to get CeeDee Lamb a running mate and Dak Prescott another weapon. Dallas traded a 2026 third-round pick, a 2027 fifth-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers for George Pickens, and a 2027 sixth-round pick.
The Cowboys likely believe a new environment could help George Pickens reach his potential. They’re betting the 24-year-old can regain the form he showed in 2023, when he recorded 63 receptions, 1,140 receiving yards, and five touchdowns.
However, FOX Sports host Colin Cowherd doesn’t see that happening and criticized the Cowboys for trading for George Pickens.
Cowboys’ Jerry Jones called out over George Pickens
On a recent episode of the “Colin Cowherd Podcast,” Cowherd told fellow FOX Sports host Nick Wright that it’s a worrying sign if Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin wanted to part ways with the player after three seasons.

“So when he goes and gets George Pickens, the reputation is out. Basically, Tomlin, ‘I’m out.’ Jerry’s like, ‘I’m here. I’ll make it work.’ I think this is Jerry’s wildcatting oil days where he would hunt for gems. And I think that is literally his mindset with coaches and sometimes draft picks and players—that he feels like Pickens. The rest of the league is out. I am in. And I don’t think long term. I think that’s why the Cowboys are where the Cowboys are currently.”
Much of the Cowboys’ attention in training camp and the preseason has been on whether Micah Parsons and the team can finalize a contract extension.
Still, once Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles arrives, all eyes will be on George Pickens and the offense to see if the Georgia product can regain his previous form—or if this trade ends up having little impact.
