Cleveland closer named as possible target for Red Sox

The Guardians’ recent slide has put them in a position they do not want to be at. While Cleveland is 5.5 games out of the final wild card spot, its recent 10-game losing streak has put itself in a position where the Guardians may have stronger reason to sell before this month’s trade deadline.

At 42-48, the season is not over for Cleveland, but it is in a much worse position than it was at not even two weeks ago.

If the Guardians do decide to sell at the July 31 trade deadline, one of the players they could trade is closing pitcher Emmanuel Clase. In an article from Jim Bowden of The Athletic, Bowden answered 25 MLB trade deadline questions as we close in on three weeks before the end of the month.

One question Bowden answered was who the Boston Red Sox could target if they become buyers at the trade deadline. One name that he mentioned: Clase.

“If I’m Boston and your scenario plays out, I would look to add Emmanuel Clase or Ryan Helsley,” Bowden said.

While his numbers may not be as good as last season, Emmanuel Clase has still put together a good season for himself in Cleveland. He holds a record of 4-2 with an ERA of 3.12 and 40 strikeouts. He has gotten 19 saves in 23 opportunities this season.

Boston may not be the most likely destination Clase could go to, but it could turn to reality if the Red Sox stay hot and do buy.
