Chiefs vs. Texans final score, results: Texans defense delivers blow to Chiefs playoff chances in statement win

JUMP TO:

At the start of the NFL season, the thought of the Kansas City Chiefs missing the NFL postseason outright was never a thought. But, on “Sunday Night Football” those thoughts are becoming much more of a reality.

On Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs were limited to only 10 points by the Houston Texans defense, who entered the game as the No. 1 defense in the NFL. Houston intercepted the two-time MVP twice in a 20-10 win, its fifth straight as the Texans slide into the playoff picture.

While this game should be mainly about the Texans, the national story will be the fall of the Kansas City Chiefs’ dynasty. Kansas City dropped to 6-7 after the loss and have now lost four of five games. It is a measure of the Chiefs’ stunning fall that their playoff chances are now mathematically considered “thin” after the decisive loss.

Houston’s defense was the immediate story, dominating the Chiefs’ star-studded offense by holding Patrick Mahomes scoreless in the first half — only the third time in his entire career he’s endured such a stretch. In the third quarter, that dominance peaked by forcing an uncharacteristic eight straight incompletions from the typically surgical quarterback, the longest streak of his professional career.

The possibility of the Chiefs escaping with a much-needed win seemed to materialize in the third quarter after 10 unanswered points. But, the game turned on a pivotal fourth-and-one decision deep in Chiefs territory. With the game tied, Coach Andy Reid elected to go for the first down instead of punting and relying on his defense. The failed conversion gifted Houston the ball inside the 35-yard line, leading directly to the game-winning touchdown run by the Texans.

The rest of the way, the Texans stifled Mahomes, forcing another turnover on downs the next drive then intercepting the quarterback for the third time in the third quarter. As the clock hit zeroes at a cold Arrowhead Stadium, the immediate reaction was shock, except for everyone on the Houston sideline.

Houston now occupies a Wild Card spot at 8-5— but, combined with the Broncos’ earlier victory, officially and abruptly ended the Chiefs’ nine-year reign over the AFC West.

Texans vs. Chiefs results, highlights from Week 14 ‘Sunday Night Football’

Final: Texans 20, Chiefs 10

11:34 p.m.: The Houston Texans have come into Arrowhead Stadium and beat the defending AFC champions.

Behind a stellar game from the league’s No. 1 defense, forcing three turnovers on Mahomes, and Stroud doing exactly what he was supposed to throughout, the Texans win 20-10 to advance to 8-5. Houston now slides into the No. 7 seed in the AFC wild card picture.

As for the Chiefs, the thought of Patrick Mahomes and co. missing the NFL postseason is very real.

11:30 p.m.: With 33 seconds remaining, Fairbarn hits a field goal to make the lead 10.

This game is over, and the Houston Texans are seconds away from winning five in a row. The Chiefs playoff chances continue to fall off a cliff.

11:24 p.m.: Houston has a new set of downs, with Marks taking a carry up the middle and slithering to the line to gain. The Texans are 8-for-17 on third down, to the Chiefs 4-for-14.

Kansas City has no more timeouts.

11:21 p.m.: This game, and this four-game win streak, has been about the Houston Texans’ defense. And it might have just iced this game, and the season, for the three-time AFC champions.

Mahomes tries finding Kelce downfield, but it goes off his hands and right into the grasp of Azeez Al-Shaair.

It’s Mahomes’ third interception of the game, and now the Texans are in field goal range immediately.

11:18 p.m.: Kansas City’s defense comes up with a huge stop.

After a delay of game penalty set up a 3rd & long for Houston, Stroud throws an incomplete pass and the Texans have to punt.

Townsend punts the ball inside the 10, where the Chiefs will take over with less than four minutes remaining.

11:10 p.m.: Once again, the Chiefs go for it on fourth down in their own territory. And, once again, the Houston defense makes the stop.

This time, Mahomes targets Rice, who is open in the middle of the field, but the receiver drops the ball. It’s the second straight turnover on downs for Kansas City.

It was Mahomes’ eighth straight incompletion, the longest streak of his career. The Texans take back over with 5:26 remaining.

Texans 17, Chiefs 10

11:04 p.m.: The Houston Texans have the lead back.

After Marks walked off with an injury, Dare Ogunbowale comes in for his first carry of the game. He takes it eight yards and barrels into the end zone.

The Texans defense set them up in great territory, and the offense converts.

11:01 p.m.: Stroud makes a big-time throw on third down.

With Chris Jones right in his face, Stroud rolls out right and hits Higgins above the line to gain. The rookie was in between multiple defenders and Stroud bulleted it in there.

Houston is in the red zone for the first time since the touchdown.

10:58 p.m.: On 3rd & 10, Mahomes finds space with his legs, but he is inches short of a first down.

The Chiefs, right outside their 30, decide to go for it on 4th & 1. It comes up incomplete, with Mahomes rushing a throw to the wide receiver, and Houston now is set up in great territory.

The Texans defense has kept them in the game in the second half, and it might have set them up to take the lead.

10:52 p.m.: The Texans had a chance to convert on third down, with Jaylin Noel taking a carry to the left. But, he gets blown up by Justin Watson, gaining no yards.

Watson makes the big play, causing Houston to punt. Kansas City has possession once again.

10:50 p.m.: On second down, Stroud is bull rushed and sacked, setting up a 3rd & 17.

Then, the rookie receiver Higgins makes a huge play, reeling in a pass from Stroud and reaching over the sticks.

What a way for Houston to get its first chain-mover.

10:48 p.m.: The Houston defense made a play that could change the game.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Mahomes throws one deep, and it’s Kamari Lassiter who comes down with the interception. It’s Mahomes’ second of the game.

Houston is still looking for its first first down of the half. Let’s see if it can convert here.

End of the third quarter: Texans 10, Chiefs 10

10:42 p.m.: The Kansas City defense has turned this game on its head.

Once again, the unit forces a three-and-out on Houston, the fourth straight time to begin the second half.

The Texans have -2 yards in the second half to the Chiefs’ 128, and Mahomes and the Chiefs have a chance to take the lead.

Texans 10, Chiefs 10

10:32 p.m.: The Texans once again go three-and out, gaining zero yards on the drive. Houston has not gotten into opponent territory yet this half.

10:27 p.m.: Though Kansas City got near midfield, it couldn’t do anything.

Mahomes finds Travis Kelce for his first catch of the day, but it’s not enough.

Matt Ariaza comes on to punt and Houston has the ball back.

10:23 p.m.: The Chiefs are ahead of the 30 after two big first downs.

Mahomes hits Worthy for 23 yards to the Kansas City 38, and momentum is swinging to the home team.

10:17 p.m.: The Chiefs once again force a three-and-out on the Houston offense.

After a two-yard Marks run, Stroud has two incomplete passes and Townsend comes onto punt.

The Chiefs will start inside their 10.

Texans 10, Chiefs 7

10:09 p.m.: From the Houston 3, the Chiefs go for it on 4th & 1, and it ends in the end zone.

Hunt takes a carry up the middle, and its a one-possession game.

10:06 p.m.: Just like that, Kansas City is in the red zone.

On the first play for the Chiefs, Mahomes finds Hollywood Brown deep downfield for a 35-yard gain.

10:04 p.m.: On 3rd & 14, Stroud overthrows Xavier Hutchinson for what would have been a first down, and the Chiefs defense is able to get off the field fast.

A Townsend punt puts the Chiefs on their 44 to start the drive.

10:01 p.m.: We have kicked off in the second half, with Stroud and Houston having possession first.

Let’s see if its more Houston dominance or a Kansas City comeback.

9:54 p.m.: For the third time in the Patrick Mahomes era, the Chiefs are scoreless at halftime.

Halftime: Texans 10, Chiefs 0

9:47 p.m.: At halftime, Houston leads by 10.

The Texans have kept Mahomes and the Chiefs offense scoreless, and on the other side, Stroud is having a good game, connecting with receivers in critical situations.

Houston will have the chance to extend the lead to start the third quarter.

9:45 p.m.: Stroud is having one of his best games of the season. This time, he makes a critical play on 3rd & 16; with Chris Jones around his legs, Stroud hits Collins downfield for 18 yards.

Houston has a new set of downs.

9:39 p.m.: Things are getting worse and worse for the Kansas City Chiefs.

After Mahomes goes down on 3rd & 5, Harrison Butker comes out to hit a relatively-easy field goal. Though, the kicker doinks it off the post, and the Chiefs remain scoreless.

With 1:00 remaining, Houston has a chance to add onto the lead.

9:32 p.m.: Mahomes has arguably his biggest throw of the day.

He hits Worthy downfield for 22 yards and Kansas City is down to the Houston 37.

9:29 p.m.: The Chiefs get a first down, with Mahomes finding Tyquan Thornton for 12 yards, and they’re out from inside the 10.

9:24 p.m.: Houston goes three-and-out and comes up empty after the turnover.

Though, after a great Townsend punt, the Chiefs will start their drive at the 3.

9:20 p.m.: The Texans defense shows why it is the best in the league up to this point, and it’s one of the stars, Jalen Pitre.

Mahomes throws in the middle of the field, and Pitre tips it up into the air, and is able to find it and lay out for the interception.

It’s the first turnover of the game, and Kansas City remains scoreless.

Texans 10, Chiefs 0

9:14 p.m.: Stroud and the Houston Texans lead 10-0 at Arrowhead Stadium.

On 3rd & goal, Stroud finds a wide open Woody Marks, and the rookie is able to stroll into the end zone with nobody around him. It’s a nine-yard touchdown, Marks’ third receiving score of the season.

Stroud gets his first touchdown pass since Oct. 26.

9:11 p.m.: Stroud and Collins made a huge connection in the first, and now they no in the second.

Stroud rolls out to the right and hits Collins — who came back downfield — and Collins has space, running for 52 yards down to the red zone.

Collins has two receptions for 99 yards tonight.

9:08 p.m.: On 3rd & 8, Stroud tries finding Collins. Though it comes up incomplete, there’s a controversial defensive holding on Kansas City.

The Texans move the chains.

End of the first quarter: Texans 3, Chiefs 0

9:01 p.m.: The Chiefs are across midfield after a Kareem Hunt run.

But, the next play, Mahomes gets sacked for the second time tonight, going down for nine yards. The Chiefs faced a 3rd & 17, and Rice gets a few yards but not close to the sticks.

Kansas City punts for the third straight time to open the game.

Texans 3, Chiefs 0

8:53 p.m. FIELD GOAL: After a sequence where replay assist incorrectly ruled a play a first down, Houston faced a 4th & 1, but an offsides penalty made it 4th & 6.

Kaimi Fairbarn comes on to hit a field goal, and Houston is the first team on the board.

8:43 p.m.: Nico Collins has the first huge play of the game. Stroud hits him, and he takes it all the way to the Kansas City 21 for 46 yards.

Kansas City has lost three out of four heading into tonight.

7:32 p.m.: Nothing screams primetime like Arrowhead Stadium for a big AFC clash.

This is the second Sunday night game this season at Arrowhead.

The most notable for Houston is tackle Jawaan Taylor, who is dealing with a triceps and knee injury.

5:45 p.m.: Will Anderson is one of the league’s top pass rushers, with 10.5 sacks on the season.

Last time he was on primetime, he got to Josh Allen multiple times in Houston’s win.

5:43 p.m.: It’s going to be a cold one in Kansas City.

Both offenses — which have each had their struggles this year — will have to brave the cold against the two top defenses they line up against.

5:34 p.m.: We are less than three hours away from a pivotal AFC clash at Arrowhead Stadium.

Both the Chiefs and Texans are looking to get into wild card spots in the conference. With a win tonight, Houston would be tied with the Indianapolis Colts (8-5) for the No. 7 seed.
