Chiefs vs. Giants final score, result: Tyquan Thornton dazzles as Kansas City breezes past New York

The Kansas City Chiefs picked up their first win in 2025 on Sunday, downing the Giants, 22-9 at MetLife Stadium.

The match represented another uneven showing for the Chiefs (1-2). On one hand, the Chiefs’ defense sparkled, forcing two turnovers and limiting the Giants (0-2) to one touchdown. On the other, Kansas City’s defense went large periods without fireworks, struggling to find pay dirt against a New York defense that conceded 40 vs. the Cowboys in Week 2.

Patrick Mahomes was solid, completing 22-of-37 passes for 224 yards and one touchdown on Sunday night. He struck up quite the partnership with newcomer Tyquan Thornton, who led the way for Kansas City with five catches, 71 yards and a score. The Giants received a standout showing from rookie Cam Skattebo, who collected 121 yards of total offense.

But Russell Wilson was lackluster, felled by pressure and a harrowing Chiefs secondary. The veteran signal-caller completed 18-of-32 passes for 160 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions, effectively dooming New York’s comeback effort.

The Sporting News tracked live updates from the Chiefs’ bout with the Giants at MetLife Stadium. Below are the results, highlights and more from Sunday’s match.

Chiefs vs. Giants live updates, highlights from ‘Sunday Night Football’

End of fourth quarter: Chiefs 23, Giants 9

11:05 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Kansas City storms back with a score of its own! This one sees the Chiefs trot into the end zone courtesy of a Kareem Hunt run. Special mention for Tyquan Thornton, who continues to look like WR1 in Rashee Rice’s absence.

Chiefs 22, Giants 9

10:55 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Skattebo powered the Giants’ latest scoring drive, collecting 24 of New York’s 72 yards. The Giants failed to penetrate the end zone once more. But Graham Gano’s 25-yarder did cut Kansas City’s advantage to a single possession.

Chiefs 16, Giants 9

End of third quarter: Chiefs 16, Giants 6

10:35 p.m.: The Giants continue to seek out Skattebo with Nabers unable to find much space. He just collected 21 yards after fielding a catch from behind the line of scrimmage.

10:20 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! Kansas City’s offense finally strikes, as Mahomes finds Tyquan Thornton to give the Chiefs a 10-point advantage.

Chiefs 16, Giants 6

10:10 p.m.: The Chiefs start the second half with possession of the ball. They’ll look to add to their fragile advantage before the third frame comes to a close.

End of second quarter: Chiefs 9, Giants 6

10:00 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Butker finds the target once more, this time from short-range, as the Chiefs retake the lead.

Chiefs 9, Giants 6

9:45 p.m.: INTERCEPTION! The Giants looked poised to add another score to its collection after crawling deep into Kansas City territory. But Wilson’s pick spoiled things; the veteran QB saw his throw to Malik Nabers ripped out of the sky by Jaylen Watson.

9:35 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN! The Giants open up their scoring account with aplomb as Cam Skattebo races into pay dirt from 13 yards out. Gillan’s ensuing field goal missed the target. But New York is level with its heavily-favored opposition.

Chiefs 6, Giants 6

9:22 p.m.: After climbing into New York territory, Butker lined up for his third field goal attempt in as many drives. This one spurned the right upright entirely. Kansas City’s attack leaves more points on the board.

9:15 p.m.: INTERCEPTION! Wilson’s errant toss is retrieved by Christian Roland-Wallace, who brings the ensuing effort into Kansas City territory!

9:05 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Butker doubles the Chiefs’ advantage courtesy of a try from 48 yards out.

Chiefs 6, Giants 0

End of first quarter: Chiefs 3, Giants 0

8:55 p.m.: The Giants’ second drive of the day ends in ashes, courtesy of a punt. Kansas City will receive the ball to start the second half.

8:40 p.m.: FIELD GOAL! Harrison Butker clanks his effort off the upright — and in — to give the Chiefs an early lead. Uneven start from Mahomes, who brought the team down the field but also missed a few passes, including an open pass to Travis Kelce.

Chiefs 3, Giants 0

8:25 p.m.: Kansas City gets the ball back after coaxing a turnover on downs out of the Giants’ attack.

8:10 p.m.: And we’re off! The Giants will receive the ball to start the affair.

8:00 p.m.: New York will be pegged back in special teams after Graham Gano was ruled out with injury right before the game. The Giants will likely rely on punter Jamie Gillan to fill in for Gano. He didn’t fare all that well the last time he was asked to fulfill such a duty, missing his sole PAT attempt in New York’s loss to Washington last year.

7:45 p.m.: Here’s a look at Chiefs standout Patrick Mahomes firing darts ahead of tonight’s match. It will be interesting to see how many chances he’ll get to fire passes on Sunday — after all, he’s been one of the league’s most productive runners thus far this season.

7:30 p.m.: Here’s a look at the inactives for tonight’s matchup.
