Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith is heading into the spring with some uncertainty about his future with the franchise. While the Chiefs franchise tagged the 25-year-old Pro Bowler on a one-year $23,402,000 deal, he is still set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2026.
Smith’s productivity and improvement throughout the year will likely make him the highest-paid offensive guard in the NFL, and he knows it. That being said, the right guard’s comments on Wednesday in an interview on the “Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams” are encouraging for Chiefs fans.
“Ultimately, I can only focus on just working out and training. I love Kansas City; it’s my home. I love the Chiefs,” said Smith. “The fans in Kansas City are some of the best people I’ve ever been around. Ultimately, I would love to stay there. That’s my plan.”
As of now, it does look like the Chiefs are planning on extending their star lineman. Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones are restructuring their deals to give this franchise more salary cap space. The Chiefs’ organization has expressed its intent on reaching a long-term extension with Smith before the July 15 deadline.
Overall, the former sixth-round pick out of Tennessee has had a remarkable journey to this point in his career. Smith is the ultimate overachiever and is playing at a position that the Chiefs desperately need to have certainty at.
This organization has already moved around some pieces this offseason to rebuild its offensive line after the unit’s dismal performance in Super LIX. But the two main constants are Smith and center Creed Humphrey, and the Chiefs are looking to keep them that way for the foreseeable future.
