NFL players aren’t always kept in the loop, even when the front office is making decisions regarding their individual futures.
Kansas City Chiefs free-agent safety Justin Reid appears to have learned that firsthand this week.
Reid, a seven-year NFL veteran, has been an important starter on the last three Chiefs teams, winning a pair of Super Bowl rings in the process. But Kansas City has some tough stay-or-go decisions to make this spring, and one insider’s report seems to indicate Reid is trending towards the “go” side.
On Tuesday, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reported on the “Only Weird Games” podcast that the Chiefs were unlikely to bring Reid back in free agency. And Reid had a brief, but memorable response, seemingly as unaware of the report as anyone else.
“Well that’s news…” Reid quipped in response to KC Sports Network’s post announcing Taylor’s report on X.
Of course, Taylor’s report did not insinuate that any decisions were final, and with free agency officially still a week away, things could still change. It’s also not clear whether Reid was taken aback by the veracity of the report or insinuating that it wasn’t truthful.
Last season, Reid had 87 tackles, two interceptions, and nine passes defended. He’s still a very productive player, and he’s entering his age-28 season, so there should still be plenty of tread left on the tires.
Whether the Chiefs wind up choosing to bring Reid back is still undecided, officially. But Taylor’s report could be an early warning that the safety’s time in KC is up.
