The Kansas City Chiefs need to address their need at left tackle in the upcoming NFL Draft. Joe Thuney ended the season playing left tackle, but the Chiefs traded him to the Chicago Bears.
The Chiefs’ offense was dismantled by the Philadelphia Eagles’ pass rush in the Super Bowl. Although they have the 31st overall pick in the draft, they could try to move up to land a premier left tackle. AthlonSports’ Luke Easterling predicted the Chiefs would make a trade with the Minnesota Vikings to move up seven spots and draft Kelvin Banks Jr.
“Last year was the second time the Chiefs have been embarrassed in a Super Bowl in large part because of their inability to protect Patrick Mahomes,” wrote Easterling. “The most pressing need is obviously at left tackle, and Kansas City can’t afford to wait and hope the right one falls to them. Banks has the tools and experience to be an immediate upgrade, and he’s worth giving up a third-round pick to jump ahead of other tackle-needy teams.”
Banks would be an immediate starter for the Chiefs, and they may not be able to afford waiting until the 31st pick to find a starter to protect Mahomes’ blind side.
Banks was named a First-team Associated Press All-American and First-team All-SEC last season. He also won the Lombardi Award, given to the top offensive lineman. The University of Texas star checks in at 6-foot-5-inches, 315 pounds.
