The Kansas City Chiefs, since Patrick Mahomes took over, have been one of the best teams in the NFL. Mahomes has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks ever in just eight years in the league.
Mahomes is already a six-time Pro Bowler, a two-time NFL MVP, a two-time All-Pro, a three-time Super Bowl champion and three-time Super Bowl MVP. However, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger thinks Aaron Rodgers in his prime was better than Mahomes is right now, and that Mahomes’ prime is close to over. Mahomes is arguably the best quarterback in the NFL, and has been for multiple years.
“I would take Aaron in his prime over Patrick now,” Roethlisberger said on his podcast “Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger. “I think Aaron Rodgers in his prime was one of the top few to ever do it and so is Patrick Mahomes at his prime. Patrick Mahomes is just like entering out of his prime. I think Patrick Mahomes is phenomenal. He’s going to go down as another arguable GOAT.”
Rodgers’ last few seasons may have clouded the judgment of many observers. He struggled in 2022, tore his Achilles in 2023 and was not great last year. It can be argued that the New York Jets organization had a lot to do with Rodgers’ struggles last year, but the reality is that he is just an aging quarterback. However, at his peak, he was one of the most talented players of all time.
Rodgers is a Super Bowl champion, 10-time Pro Bowler, four-time All-Pro, Super Bowl MVP and four-time NFL MVP. Rodgers won back-to-back MVP Awards in 2020 and 2021. He made a career out of not throwing interceptions and keeping his team alive. It’s hard to deny his greatness.

However, Mahomes is still playing and producing at a high level. He has helped lead his team to three consecutive Super Bowls, and fell just short of the first three-peat in NFL history. To say he is exiting his prime and so easily say Rodgers was better in his prime is a quick judgment. Both are great quarterbacks, and Mahomes has noted how he admires Rodgers’ game. However, to start making comparisons while Mahomes is still arguably the best player in football may be foolish.
Roethlisberger did note that when comparing both players in their prime, it would not be so cut and dry. However, once again, he is quick to say Mahomes’ prime is over or coming to an end.
