Chelsea reignite interest in Porto star who is also linked with Tottenham

Chelsea invested a major chunk in improving their attack this summer and yet they are still in the market for another prolific goalscorer.

The Blues signed Joao Pedro, who has adapted to life at Stamford Bridge whereas Liam Delap has been out injured after making the move to West London from Ipswich Town.

While Pedro has done reasonably well this season, Enzo Maresca is looking for someone who is traditionally a number 9.

Therefore, according to reports via Portuguese outlet A Bola, FC Porto star Samu Aghehowa is in Chelsea’s radar yet again.

Interestingly, the Blues are not the only club interested in the 21-year-old as Tottenham Hotspur are also eyeing a move for the Spain international.

Other Premier League clubs include Aston Villa and Newcastle United, who are keeping close tabs on Aghehowa’s development at Porto.

Before he moved to Porto last year, he was strongly linked with Chelsea but eventually the move didn’t materialize. Now, the Blues have reignited their interest in the Spaniard, who has been scoring goals for fun for Porto in the Primeira Liga.

Why are Chelsea chasing Porto’s Samu Aghehowa?

Aghehowa gained popularity at Granada’s B team before breaking into the first team and eventually Atletico Madrid triggered his release clause of 6m in August 2023.

He was sent out on loan to Alaves where he finished as the club’s highest goalscorer in La Liga with eight goals.

Chelsea were interested in the Spaniard in 2024 and Atletico Madrid after a spell of negotiation almost agreed to their terms but an ankle injury and image rights regulations meant the collapse of the deal.

Aghehowa eventually moved to Porto where he is contract until 2029 and has a €100m ($116.2m) release clause. His hunger, physicality and goalscoring instincts have made him one of the most exciting young strikers in Europe.

Considering the 21-year-old has hammered 35 goals and three assists in 54 appearances for Porto, it is unlikely they will allow him to leave for anything less than the release clause.

The Spaniard is someone who can play as a proper focal point in attack with his exquisite link-up play, but he could also feature as a mobile forward, who relies on intelligent movements in the final third.

He is one of the reasons why Francesco Farioli’s men are currently leading the Primeira Liga points table, three points ahead of Sporting CP in second position after eight league games.

Overall, Aghehowa could be the perfect player for Chelsea as he suits Maresca’s requirements and also matches their transfer policy of signing youngsters.

However there’s a lot of competition for the signature of the Spanish forward and it will be interesting to see where he ends up next summer.
