Chelsea seem to have their eyes firmly set on a young star — and they believe they’re leading the race.
The Blues are said to be “quietly confident” about beating Manchester United to sign Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap this summer.
With the transfer window getting closer, the competition is heating up faster than a Sunday League argument over a throw-in.
Delap, who has impressed with 12 goals in the Premier League this season, could be available for £30 million if Ipswich are relegated — and sadly for the Tractor Boys, that seems likely.
Manchester United have been tracking Delap closely and even made him their top attacking target.
But Chelsea have been working behind the scenes for longer, and that early move might just give them the upper hand.
Why Chelsea believe they lead the race to sign Liam Delap
According to reports (via GIVEMESPORT), Chelsea feel they are ahead of United because of their longer interest in Delap.
Enzo Maresca, who once worked with Delap at Manchester City, is said to be pushing for the deal. Sometimes in football, it’s not just about money — it’s about who knows your coffee order at the training ground.
Meanwhile, Manchester United still have other ideas in mind. They have been flirting with the idea of signing Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray.
But Osimhen’s massive wage demands have turned that dream into a bit of a financial nightmare.
United also face another hurdle. While Chelsea might miss out on Champions League football, United still have a shot through the Europa League.
If they win the tournament, they could offer Delap top-tier European football next season. That could turn the tide — or it could leave them chasing shadows if Chelsea get the deal done first.
As it stands, Delap has not given a clear sign about where he wants to go. Both clubs are waiting, but Chelsea’s optimism is growing louder by the day.
