Charlie McAvoy injury update

McAvoy did not play Monday vs. Sweden with what Team USA head coach Mike Sullivan described as an “upper-body injury.”

“Charlie obviously is, right now he’s out with an upper-body injury,” Sullivan said Monday.

Sullivan said that the team would know more information on Tuesday after more tests were done on his defenseman.

Tuesday, reports surfaced that McAvoy had been admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital, according to the Boston Globe’s Jim McBride. McAvoy was admitted with “an infection that stemmed from a minor injury,” per Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.

Seravalli added that McAvoy “is fine” and the hospitalization comes with “no long-term concern.”

McAvoy had been making his presence felt in the tournament, specifically in Team USA’s win over Canada on Saturday. His physicality was on full display as he led the team with five hits.

McAvoy has not been ruled out for Thursday’s rematch vs. Canada in the final. Whether or not he will be available will be determined later.

This story will be updated as more information on the severity of McAvoy’s injury is provided.
