Finally, Trey Lance may have found a home.
It’s not what anyone drew up when he was the No. 2 overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021. No, first he had to be a bust there, then he had to put together a short stint as a backup on the Dallas Cowboys.
But now, Lance looks comfortable.
He’s with the Los Angeles Chargers, competing with Taylor Heinicke to be their backup QB. And CBS Sports writer Jeff Kerr thinks Lance is on his way to getting that QB2 gig.
“When Lance signed with the Chargers this offseason, this wasn’t viewed as a reclamation project,” Kerr writes. “The Chargers gave him $6.2 million to compete for the QB2 job, but Taylor Heinicke seemed to be the favorite for the role because of his experience and ability to win a game if he had to fill in for Justin Herbert. This preseason, Lance has outperformed Heinicke. Saturday’s preseason game against the Rams was the telltale sign, as Lance completed 7 of his 15 for 121 yards — the highlight being a 34-yard strike to Tre Harris on the opening drive of the third quarter. Lance added another 25 yards rushing for Los Angeles, as his confidence looks significantly better than at any point in Dallas. This is Lance’s job to lose. Heck, he might have won the job already.”

There have been multiple moments captured on TV broadcasts this preseason that show Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh with Lance on the sideline, uplifting him after key moments. It’s that type of belief in a player that can truly help turn around a career that was in a bit of a messy spot.
Lance may never live up to his draft position, but that’s not his directive any longer. He’s not with the team that chose him.

Instead, it’s up to Lance to make his NFL career a long and fruitful one in whatever form he can manage.
Right now, that’s as the Chargers’ backup quarterback, and he’ll try to make the most of it.
