The Los Angeles Chargers are already in offseason mode even though four teams are still vying for a spot in Super Bowl LIX.
The new league year will begin in March and the free-agent signing period will kick off at that time. Before then, the Chargers could clear some space under the salary cap by eliminating some of the contracts on their books. According to Over the Cap, the team currently has about $63 million in available cap space. Only five teams have more room to spend, so that could be big.
But if the Chargers want more money to spend, they could create some by cutting one of the players identified by the Scouting Department at Bleacher Report. Let’s take a look at these players and analyze what moving on from them could mean for the team.
Los Angeles Chargers cap casualty candidates
Gus Edwards, RB
Salary cap savings: $3.1 million
The Chargers wouldn’t save a ton by cutting Gus Edwards, but it’s still a good possibility as he was largely ineffective for the team this season.
It’s obvious what Jim Harbaugh wants to do in the running game, but he needs the right personnel to be able to execute his plan. The team will need to decide what to do with J.K. Dobbins, who is a free agent, and Edwards will be a secondary consideration.
Trey Pipkins, OL
Salary cap savings: $6.8 million
After five seasons playing tackle, the Chargers moved Trey Pipkins to guard after drafting Joe Alt in the first round. It allowed him to remain in the starting lineup, but the team could probably find an upgrade, especially with an additional nearly $7 million toward their cap.
Joey Bosa, Edge
Salary cap savings: $25.4 million
Many Chargers fans probably won’t like seeing Joey Bosa’s name on this list, but any time you can get back $25 million in cap space for an oft-injured player whose production has taken a dip, it seems like an obvious move.
The Chargers will have to decide what to do with Khalil Mack, who is an unrestricted free agent, in conjunction with this move, but it doesn’t seem likely that both Bosa and Mack will be back next season.
General manager Joe Hortiz moved on from Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler this past offseason and may not have too many qualms about doing the same with Bosa.
