Los Angeles Chargers fans have long wondered what the fate of Trey Pipkins would be, as his name has been linked to trade talks within the fanbase for quite some time now. That’s not likely to change.
The team has assembled one of the best offensive lines in the NFL and Pipkins’ only role on that unit at this point will be as a swing tackle or backup guard. While it is important to have strong reserves along the offensive line, would the Chargers prefer to see what they can acquire on the trade market?
Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports feels he is the team’s best trade chip and suggests a trade should take place soon.
“The Chargers currently have an obvious trade piece in Trey Pipkins, who is currently one of the highest-paid backup offensive linemen in the league. Trading Pipkins for another asset that can better help this team could very well be the key to unlock the safe that has the elusive Chargers playoff victory.
Pipkins has experience playing both offensive tackle spots and a season starting at guard for the Chargers. This four-spot versatility is of extreme value and should draw interest from teams looking to improve their offensive line. While Pipkins has been at best a slightly above average offensive tackle and at worst an unplayable starter (granted, this is before his development at the tackle spot), his interest could be varied”, wrote Palacios.
Palacios offers three teams that could swing a deal for the Chargers’ offensive lineman, the Cardinals, Seahawks and Giants. The return is late-round picks, though in the proposed deal with the Seahawks, it’s a straight-across swap for guard Anthony Bradford, a fourth-round pick in 2023.
The Chargers could very well look to move Pipkins this offseason, but for a former third-round pick with 84 games of NFL experience and 56 starts who is only 28 years old, they would probably like a little more in return, especially if it’s a move to “put them over the hump”, as was suggested here.
