The Los Angeles Chargers have already created what should be one of the best running back combinations in the league for the coming season with Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton, but could the team be looking for more?
There isn’t a ton of depth behind those two running backs, and Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports sees the team making a huge move to give the team another option. Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report recently suggested that one of the top trade assets the Los Angeles Rams currently possess is running back Kyren Williams. Palacios sees a deal between the L.A. rivals.
“Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Chargers had one of the worst running back units last season with J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards. Strangely, they put Dobbins on a tender, so they could be bringing him back on a one-year deal at minimum despite his unproductive season. Edwards isn’t returning, and they have two solid starters in Najee Harris and 2025 draft pick Omarion Hampton. Harris will most likely start, but since they’ve got Hampton, he may win the job, and Harris will likely join a new team next season.
With that, Williams should join the Chargers no matter the situation to supplement quarterback Justin Herbert with a powerhouse running game”, wrote Palacios.
While this looks like a fun deal on paper, it includes several miscalculations.
For starters, the Chargers had a pretty good backfield last season and Dobbins was far from unproductive. In fact, he was pretty much the opposite. And while Williams may be a top trade asset for the Rams, there is almost no chance the team trades him considering the lack of depth on the roster behind him.
Williams has been one of the better running backs in the NFL the last two seasons and while fantasy football players may be the only ones who truly realize that, it doesn’t mean it’s not true.
In addition, trading for Williams would further question the team signing Harris to a deal worth up to $9 million. It would make next to no sense at that point.
NFL trades are fun to talk about, particularly when many fans make deals like this on the Madden video game all the time. But there are dozens of reasons why few trades happen each season and this one would have next to no chance of actually happening.
