The Los Angeles Chargers have a good defense in place and they were able to create an effective running game last season with Jim Harbaugh bringing in his proven system and Greg Roman calling the offense.
But there is a glaring weakness at wide receiver.
The Chargers got a tremendous rookie season from Ladd McConkey and if the team can find a top-notch option to pair with him this coming season, the team could be a handful for anyone to deal with.
Justin Herbert is one of the game’s top pure passers but the Chargers are slowly wasting that talent by giving him guys like D.J. Chark, Quentin Johnston and Will Dissly to throw the ball to. An upgrade is essential and that is why rumors have already been swirling in connection with names such as Deebo Samuel, Davante Adams and Cooper Kupp.
But free agency has an option no one is really talking about, but Nick Villano of FanSided recently discussed where he thinks the top 30 free agents will sign next year and he has Chris Godwin leaving Tampa Bay to sign with the Chargers.
Godwin is a veteran receiver who has been a consistent option in the Buccaneers’ passing game. He is coming off of an ugly ankle injury that cut his 2024 season short, but so long as he is fully recovered from that, he is a viable option for the team.
Godwin has 579 career catches for 7,266 yards and 39 touchdowns. He will be just 29 years old when the 2025 season kicks off, so there should still be plenty of football left in him.
A name like Adams or Samuel might bring more fanfare, but a deal for Godwin might make more sense and might bring better results. This is a prediction that Chargers fans should be quite happy about if it comes true.
