Chargers predicted to add 55.5-sack edge rusher following huge year with Commanders

The Los Angeles Chargers have an interesting offseason in front of them as they try to build on a season in which they won 11 games.

With one year under his belt as the team’s head coach, Jim Harbaugh will have a better idea of what he needs in year two and one of the biggest decisions he and general manager Joe Hortiz will face centers around the edge rusher spot. The team wants to bring back Khalil Mack, one of the best pass-rushers of the last decade in the NFL, but that might mean cutting Joey Bosa to free up the money to do so.

It will be difficult for the team to have both of them on next season’s roster but Tuli Tuipolotu could easily slide into a more prominent role. However, the team will want to bring in more depth and the free-agent market offers a veteran option that is being overlooked in most discussions.

Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports recently discussed the idea of the Chargers adding Dante Fowler Jr., who the Washington Commanders may not be able to bring back.

Palacios floats Fowler as a potential replacement for Mack, but he would be more likely a replacement for Bosa, who the Chargers seem ready to move on from.

Fowler, a first-round pick back in 2015, has always had a knack for getting after the quarterback and he did that last season in Washington to the tune of 10.5 sacks. he has 55.5 sacks for his career and entering his age 31 season, he can still be effective off the edge.

The Chargers will first need to decide what to do with Bosa and then see if Mack wants to come back. Either way, adding Fowler is something the team should be looking into.
