The Los Angeles Chargers will almost certainly be looking to add to the wide receiver room this offseason and many ideas have already been tossed around. Those include signing one of the top names in free agency, Tee Higgins, or trading for Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp.
But Marcus Mosher of The 33rd Team has presented a new option. While detailing one free agent that each team should sign in free agency, he links Stefon Diggs to the Chargers. He has the Chargers signing him to a one-year deal worth $14 million.
Wow.
While it wouldn’t be the worst move the team could make, it would spark some controversy. Diggs was jettisoned out of Buffalo when it seemed to come out that he wasn’t much of a team player while there. In his first season with the Houston Texans, he tore his ACL.
Chargers urged to sign Stefon Diggs in free agency
Though Diggs is still one of the league’s most dynamic wide receivers when healthy, it’s a risky move to sign a 31-year-old player coming off a significant injury like that, particularly when you’re paying him a high salary.
“It’s no secret that the Los Angeles Chargers need wide receiver help. Quentin Johnston just isn’t reliable enough to be the No. 1 X-receiver, and Joshua Palmer can’t stay on the field. Ladd McConkey was the team’s leading receiver from the slot, but adding Diggs would give them a viable and reliable option on the outside.
Diggs will be returning from a torn ACL, which will greatly discount his price. But for a team that needs another receiver as badly as the Chargers do, this could end up being a massive steal”, wrote Mosher.
The Chargers definitely need to upgrade the wide receiver position, but it seems like a deal such as this should be more of a plan C type of thing, after several other ideas failed.
