Chargers cut NFL Hall of Famer’s son

It can’t be easy to play the same position as your father, who is considered the greatest to ever do it at that spot.

That’s what Brenden Rice has attempted to do throughout his football life.

Yes, he’s the son of Jerry Rice.

He hasn’t found the same NFL success. On Monday, the Los Angeles Chargers waived Rice, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. There’s still a chance Rice ends up on the Chargers’ practice squad.

The Chargers took Rice in the seventh round in 2024 after he split his college career between Colorado and USC.

As a rookie, Rice played in three games. He totaled three offensive snaps and 10 special-teams snaps.

He didn’t catch a pass or record a tackle as a rookie before being placed on injured reserve in November.

Rice was hoping to make more of an impact this season, although the Chargers don’t appear to be on the same page.

He’s an intriguing talent at 6-foot-3 with a 4.50-second 40-yard dash and 36.5-inch vertical leap.

Those numbers almost make Rice into a guy worth giving a shot just based on the testing results and his last name.

Pedigree comes with pressure, but it can also open doors and create opportunity.

That’s because the next place Rice could find signatures was simple: a San Francisco Giants game, where anyone in the stands would want love from the son of Jerry Rice.
