The Boston Celtics might have had a worse offseason than any other team, and their future isn’t all that bright, either.
This summer has been a wild one for Boston to say the least. After winning the NBA title in 2024, GM Brad Stevens has effectively gutted the championship roster, shipping out Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, while letting Luke Kornet and Al Horford walk in free agency.
While the Celtics still have Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Derrick White around to lead the way, Tatum’s injury has left Boston firmly out of contention in 2026. Considering that the Celtics have already gutted the team for financial reasons, getting back to contender status upon his return isn’t a guarantee.
The Celtics have made a mess
In a recent article from Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus, he named the Celtics among the five worst cap situations in the league, and it’s hard to argue with his assessment. As Pincus noted, the Celtics’ teardown this summer has made things difficult for 2026 and beyond.
While Boston might not have to worry about building a contender this season, its limited assets will make it hard for the team to build that title-level team again. As Pincus noted, the Celtics simply don’t have much to work with in terms of draft capital, with their 2026 being the easiest to move and potentially most valuable.
In any case, the Celtics have made some big moves this offseason, and they could soon come back to haunt Boston if things don’t go according to plan next summer.
