Celtics officially sign former Atlantic 10 POY to new contract

The Boston Celtics have officially signed a former Atlantic 10 NCAA standout guard to a new deal.

Sources inform Noa Dalzell of CLNS that Boston has inked combo guard Max Shulga, the Celtics’ No. 57 pick in last month’s draft, to a two-way contract.

The 6-foot-5 VCU product appeared in five contests for Boston’s Summer League team in Las Vegas, but struggled to score efficiently. Shulga averaged just 5.0 points on .241/.214/.727 shooting splits, 3.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.6 rebounds a night.

He joins fellow second-round draftee Amari Williams, a center out of the University of Kentucky, in occupying a two-way slot for Boston. No. 28 overall pick Hugo Gonzalez will be a part of Boston’s 15-man standard roster. One two-way slot remains. 2024-25 two-way player Miles Norris remains a restricted free agent, while training camp signings Hayden Gray and Jalen Bridges might also be in competition for that final two-way spot heading into the fall.

“It’s gonna be hard,” Shulga predicted about his transition to the NBA from college, per CLNS Media Boston. “As a rookie, especially, it’s gonna be a transition period. Just try to learn as much as I can from coaches, players on the team — vets — just be a sponge and learn about everything as much as I can.”

Shulga spent his first three NCAA seasons with Utah State, but fully blossomed when he transferred to VCU in 2023-24. Last season for the Rams, Shulga averaged a career-best 15.0 points on .435/.387/.783 shooting splits, 5.9 boards, 4.0 dimes and 1.8 swipes a night, across 35 games (all starts).
