Celtics executive eyeing former Spurs center to help replace Kristaps Porzingis

The Boston Celtics are in need of frontcourt help, and a standout from their Summer League squad could get a shot with the club.

Boston traded Kristaps Porzingis to Atlanta in a cost-cutting maneuver, with its center group now featuring Luka Garza, Neemias Queta and Xavier Tillman. The team is also expected to lose veteran big man Al Horford in free agency. While the Celtics could stick with their current group, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them add another big man as part of their retooling efforts.

According to Keith Smith of Spotrac, the Celtics are interested in signing former Spurs center Charles Bassey following his Summer League stint with Boston.

“Considering he got added to our team so late, this was an awesome run for him,” a Celtics front office executive said. “No idea if we’ll have roster space for him or not. But we’d love to keep working with Charles and see if we can make something work.”

Bassey showcased his rebounding and shot-blocking abilities during Summer League play, averaging 15.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks across 21.3 minutes per game in three outings.

The Western Kentucky product spent the past three seasons in San Antonio, primarily serving as a reserve center. He saw limited action during the 2024-25 campaign, during which he averaged 4.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 10.4 minutes per game over just 36 regular-season appearances.

With Boston lacking a true first option at center, Bassey could have a legitimate opportunity to carve out an increased role if signed.
