Celtics could work with in conference rival, acquire 24-year-old guard

The Boston Celtics roster heading into next season is not the strongest when compared to other years.

With Jayson Tatum likely out for all of the season, it will be up to Jaylen Brown and the rest of the supporting cast to lead this team to a championship.

If they want to prepare for a time when Tatum comes back, Sam LaFrance of Fansided proposes a move they could make to strengthen their roster for when he returns.

“New York Knicks guard Tyler Kolek may be a great sleeper trade candidate for Boston,” LaFrance said Tuesday. “The second-year man out of Marquette seems poised to be buried on New York’s bench for a second straight season, after the Knicks recently added depth with Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet.

“Kolek only appeared in 41 games as a rookie, playing about seven minutes per outing. He was given little opportunity to prove himself as a pro, but many members of the Knicks community feel like he has some potential to be a rotation piece someday.”

Tyler Kolek is a six-foot-three guard who has shown real point guard potential.

He currently is a backup for the New York Knicks, competing for minutes with Jalen Brunson, hence why he hasn’t had much of an opportunity to grow.

This will only get harder, as the Knicks brought in Malcolm Brogdon and Jordan Clarkson this offseason, signifying they don’t plan to give Kolek any valuable minutes.

Right now, the Celtics have Anfernee Simons, Payton Pritchard, and Derrick White as their guards, but who knows how much longer any of them will remain on the team.

Kolek would be an easy candidate with his $2.2 million contract, and could prove to be a valuable asset for Boston long-term.
