Celtics’ Al Horford tops list of best available NBA free agents

As the 2025-26 NBA season draws near, a host of unsigned unrestricted free agents linger on the market, presenting opportunities for teams to add veteran savvy or untapped potential at minimal cost. Among this group, players like Al Horford and Malik Beasley stand out for their proven contributions, while others, such as Ben Simmons, offer high-risk, high-reward intrigue amid ongoing roster tweaks across the league.

Evaluating the available free agents by projected value—considering factors like on-court impact, health, and fit—highlights a hierarchy where defensive anchors and shooters rise to the top in a cap-conscious environment.

Leading the pack is Horford, the 39-year-old center whose floor-spacing and defensive versatility make him a prime target for contenders seeking frontcourt depth without long-term ties. The Golden State Warriors are rumored to have a deal in place with Horford, but both sides are waiting for the Jonathan Kuminga mess to be settled first.

Malik Beasley has to be near the top of the list of available FAs, as his prolific shooting offers instant offense despite off-court hurdles that have slowed his market. Simmons and Markelle Fultz are two former No. 1 overall picks who present incredible risks but have also shown that they can reach a high level if healthy and engaged (a humongous “if” for both players).

In the mid-tier, Alec Burks and Torrey Craig offer reliable wing play. Monte Morris gives you low-turnover ball handling and efficient scoring, ideal for rhythm-based second units, while Russell Westbrook’s rebounding energy and enduring athleticism place him in this discussion. Delon Wright and Gary Payton II are both valuable guards — pesky defenders with connective passing and high IQ.

The next tier includes Seth Curry (pure shooting gravity), Cody Martin (hustle defense and niche appeal, though age and injuries temper expectations), Bol Bol (developmental flier), as well as Cameron Payne and Reggie Jackson (viable backup point guards). Cory Joseph, Pat Spencer, and Dalano Banton are additional bench guards with value.

Horford and Beasley will likely sign in the coming days, with Beasley’s destination more of a mystery than Horford’s. Teams eyeing contention will prioritize defensive fits like Payton, while rebuilders could gamble on factors like a Simmons revival or Bol’s growth.
