The Boston Celtics continue to lose players from their championship squad.
Over the past few weeks, Brad Stevens and the Celtics have had to see various players leave Boston. Considering the team won a championship just over a year ago, many of those departures feature players who were on that title-winning squad.
While the most impactful departures included the trades of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, there have been some other notable moves this offseason. Luke Kornet signed with the San Antonio Spurs, and Al Horford seems likely to land in Golden State when restricted free agency gets sorted out.
Meanwhile, the Celtics waived another member of their title squad in recent days, sending JD Davison into free agency. Although Davison never carved out a big role in Boston, he was quick to find a new home, signing a two-way deal with the Houston Rockets on Sunday.
While a two-way deal doesn’t always guarantee playing time at the NBA level, Davison might have an opportunity to get into the mix in Houston. Led by former Celtics coach Ime Udoka, the Rockets are looking to compete for an NBA title next season, and a guard like Davison might get some run to see if he could be a surprise contributor on one of the West’s best.
In three years in Boston, Davison played in 36 regular season games, playing on two-way contracts for almost all of his tenure before being converted to a standard contract ahead of last season’s playoff run, making four appearances in the postseason.
While Davison never turned out to be a contributor for the Celtics, Davison still has a championship ring and will be looking to help the Rockets raise the Larry O’Brien in 2026.
