Celtic vs. Rangers final score: Scottish League Cup final 2024 result, highlights, stats as Bhoys win penalty shootout after gripping showdown

Celtic won the 2024 Scottish League Cup after triumphing in a penalty shootout at the end of a memorable encounter with Rangers at Hampden Park.

Brendan Rodgers’ side came from behind and twice had the lead against their Old Firm rivals only to see Rangers fight back to force a 3-3 draw over 120 minutes of gripping football.

Kasper Schmeichel made the critical save in the shootout, getting down to his left to keep out Ridvan Yilmaz’s effort, and Daizen Maeda ā€” who scored Celtic’s second goal in regulation time ā€” converted his side’s fifth and final spot-kick to send the Bhoys fans into rapturs.

MORE: The Old Firm rivalry: Why it matters, and who’s won the most trophies

A tense and evenly contested first half finished with Rangers 1-0 ahead, Nadim Bajrami converting a rebound after Schmeichel had saved from Hamza Igamane.

The action exploded into life in the second as Celtic turned the game on its head in the space of four minutes. Greg Taylor ā€” who gave away possession in the Celtic half in the build-up to the opener ā€” saw his shot deflect past Jack Butland for the equaliser, and Maeda’s expert control and finish after getting to a bouncing ball ahead of Leon Balogun set the Hoops on course for victory.

Mohamed Diomande drew Rangers level on 75 minutes, turning and squeezing a deflected strike into the net after having been thwarted by a flying Schmeichel save just moments earlier. Yet it looked like Celtic had snatched the win with three minutes of the 90 remaining, the winger’s composed first-time finish sparking bedlam in the stands.

Those celebrations lasted less than a minute. Rangers attacked from kickoff, and Vaclav Cerny’s deep cross from the right was headed in by substitute Danilo 21 seconds after play had restarted.

Extra time was a battle of attrition, with chances at a premium as each set of players ā€” especially those in blue ā€” seemed to feel the effects of European commitments in midweek. The first six penalties were nigh-on faultless, but Yilmaz did not get enough power on his attempt and Schmeichel got a strong hand to the ball. Butland scored for Rangers, but he could not prevent Maeda from delivering another trophy for Scotland’s (still) dominant force.

Scottish League Cup final live updates, highlights, and commentary

Celtic win the shootout!

Of course Maeda scores! It’s a terrific penalty, into the bottom-left corner. Celtic win the Scottish League Cup!

GOAL (Butland): Rangers 4-4 Celtic

What a penalty from the keeper! He lifts the shot into the corner, beyond Schmeichel’s reach. Now he must save from Maeda to keep his side’s trophy hopes alive.

GOAL (Hatate): Rangers 3-4 Celtic

No mistake from Hatate, who leaves Butland with no chance. Rangers must score their next one… and it’s goalkeeper Jack Butland!

SAVED (Yilmaz): Rangers 3-3 Celtic

Schmeichel gets down to his left and makes a fine save! Yilmaz’s effort just didn’t have enough power. Advantage Celtic.

Watch in UK:

GOAL (Engels):Ā Rangers 3-3 Celtic

Butland goes the right way but can’t reach Engels’ effort. Nobody has blinked yet.

GOAL (Danilo):Ā Rangers 3-2 Celtic

Fabulous from Danilo, who stutters and then slots his penalty into the corner.

GOAL (McGregor):Ā Rangers 2-2 Celtic

Much more rudimentary from McGregor, who powers his penalty into corner. Butland wouldn’t have got to that even if he’d gone the right way.

GOAL (Hagi):Ā Rangers 2-1 Celtic

Hagi tries a Bruno-Fernandes-esque skip andĀ justĀ squeezes his shot past Schmeichel’s hand.

GOAL (Idah):Ā Rangers 1-1 Celtic

Here comes Adam Idah… and that’s a very composed penalty. 1-1.

GOAL (Tavernier): Rangers 1-0 Celtic

Tavernier steps up first. It’s a short run-up… but it’s a great penalty!

Penalties

“It’s a devastating way to lose a game,” recalls former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew when asked about shootouts against Rangers. This one will certainly hurt whoever loses.Ā

Here’s the coin toss… and Rangers win both! These spot-kicks will be taken in front of the Gers fans.

End of extra time

That’s it for the extra period. The Scottish League Cup final will be decided by a penalty shootout.

ET 118 mins:Ā Good play from Alex Valle to get away from Tavernier and switch play towards Ralston. Celtic have a corner, which Engels takes, but the delivery isn’t great. We’re about 90 seconds from penalties…

ET 116 mins:Ā Forrest tries to trick his way through blue shirts on the edge of the box, but Dujon Sterling does enough. Rangers look exhausted here (they have, of course, had one less day to prepare).

ET 113 mins:Ā Hatate lobs the ball over the top towards Maeda, but Butland comes and catches itĀ justĀ on the edge of his box. That was a close one. If there is to be a winning goal, Celtic look the more likely to get it.

ET 109 mins:Ā Celtic work the ball from one side to the other, but Scales’ eventual cross from deep is overhit. Nicolas Raskin is down with cramp, but he’ll have to soldier on ā€” both teams have made all their available substitutions.

Kickoff: ET second half

Will we see a winner?

ET halftime

Players are making the most of this brief break to re-energise. It’s very hard to call this one now.

ET 105 mins:Ā Rangers have a spell of possession in the Celtic third, but it comes to nothing. This is on a knife-edge.

ET 102 mins:Ā Substitute Cyriel Dessers is booked within about 90 seconds of coming on. He gets a yellow for catching Carter-Vickers late on the foot.

ET 100 mins:Ā Great chance for Engels! His smart run from the right through the middle is picked out by a fine Hatate pass, but his touch is heavy and Butland is able to gather.

ET 98 mins:Ā There’s definitely fatigue setting in now. Celtic’s passing is a little less crisp, and Rangers are happy to clear their lines without fussing about keeping the ball. You can sense the tension around Hampden Park.

ET 95 mins:Ā Scales takes a loose touch and has his pocket picked by Cerny. He pulls the Rangers man’s shirt and concedes a free-kick right on the edge of the box. That was very nearly a penalty. Tarvernier takes it, but the shot goes over the bar.

Kickoff: ET first half

Alex Valle has come on for Celtic goal-scorer Taylor.

End of 90 minutes

Hagi wins a late corner with a blocked shot, but Callum McGregor heads away Tavernier’s delivery. Igamane keeps it alive, but his cross is too deep, and the referee signals the end of the 90 minutes.

90+5 mins: Maeda is offside, so Rangers get a free-kick on the edge of the box. We’re heading for extra time here.

90 mins:Ā We’ll have a minimum of six minutes of added time.

Watch in USA:

UK:

88 mins: GOAL! RANGERS HAVE LEVELLED AGAIN!Ā What a final this is! Cerny swings in a cross from the right, and Danilo, who held his run well to stay onside, nods the ball beyond Schmeichel from point-blank range. That might have been his first touch! Incredible scenes in Glasgow. There were just 21 seconds between Rangers kicking off after going a goal down and Danilo heading in the equaliser.

87 mins: GOAL! CELTIC MIGHT HAVE WON IT!Ā Kuhn leads a break down the right after Yilmaz is caught out trying to intercept a pass. He plays it to Engels and receives a return pass, sweeping home a first-time finish from 12 yards.

85 mins:Ā Bajrami tries his luck from the edge of the box, but his rasping effort hits only the side netting. That’s his last act ā€” he’s off for Danilo.

82 mins:Ā The game has understandably lost some of its earlier frenetic pace. Neither side wants to risk losing this now. Maeda has had a quiet half since his goal, but he looks a threat whenever Celtic attack down Rangers’ left.

75 mins: GOAL! DIOMANDE EQUALISES THIS TIME!Ā Celtic aren’t awake to a short corner, Diomande controls Tavernier’s cross superbly, and his shot on the turn takes a deflection off Kyogo and leaves Schmeichel helpless. What a final we have here!

Watch in USA:

UK:

74 mins:Ā Schmeichel again! Scales gives away the ball near the Celtic box, Igamane lays it back for Diomande, and his curling effort is superbly tipped away by the former Leicester City keeper.

71 mins:Ā Schmeichel gets right behind a vicious shot from Cerny. He was a long way out, but that was really well struck.

68 mins:Ā Dujon Sterling is on for Balogun, who perhaps hadn’t quite recovered from that first-half blow to his ankle. Rangers are starting to apply some pressure now, having been completely shaken by those quickfire Celtic goals.

63 mins:Ā Rangers want a penalty for Kuhn’s apparent trip on Diomande, but referee John Beaton gives a free-kick against Balogun after he caught Carter-Vickers when both men went to meet a cross. VAR upholds the referee’s call.

60 mins: GOAL! CELTIC TURN IT AROUND!Ā Maeda creates it all by himself, getting to a bouncing ball ahead of Balogun, controlling with his right foot and finishing low with his left. The Celtic fans have gone ballistic. What a start to this half!

Watch in USA:

UK:

59 mins:Ā Chance for Hatate! Butland makes a good near-post save after the Celtic midfielder shoots first time from close range.

56 mins: GOAL! CELTIC DRAW LEVEL!Ā Kyogo’s corner drops to Taylor, whose low shot takes a huge deflection and nestles into the net, with Butland completely helpless. Redemption for the Celtic No. 3!

Watch in USA:

UK:

52 mins:Ā CARTER-VICKERS SAVES CELTIC! Rangers break and it’s a four-on-one counter, but Carter-Vickers makes a sliding block to deny a tap-in. What a chance that was for 2-0.

50 mins:Ā Scales makes a swift impact, glancing Bernardo’s free-kick narrowly wide of the right-hand post. Celtic have started the half well.

Kickoff: Second half

Celtic make a change, with Auston Trusty replaced by Liam Scales. The decision seems to be a tactical one.

Halftime

Rangers deservedly lead at the break. What can Celtic do to respond?

45+3 mins:Ā Rangers are hunting a second goal, and only some last-ditch defending from Cameron Carter-Vickers and Trusty stops Vaclav Cerny from having a clear shot on goal. Celtic are relieved to hear the halftime whistle.

41 mins: GOAL! RANGERS LEAD THE FINAL!Ā Nedim Bajrami converts a simple rebound after Schmeichel saves a low shot from Igamane. That all came after Greg Taylor’s pass was intercepted, allowing Rangers’ central attacking pair to charge towards goal.

Watch in USA:

UK:

33 mins:Ā End-to-end and scrappy is how I’d describe this right now. There’s a break in play at the moment as Balogun receives treatment after hurting his left ankle when Auston Trusty landed on him.. That would be a real blow to see him come off. He’s hobbling on for now.

25 mins:Ā Clever play from Kyogo to win a free-kick 25 yards from goal, but Bernardo’s attempt hits the wall. Celtic are just starting to assert themselves on the ball.

19 mins:Ā Time for Rangers to threaten again. Hagi forces a corner, and from the resulting set-piece, Balogun’s header at the far post is caught by Schmeichel. This is a real battle at the moment.

15 mins:Ā BIG SAVE FROM BUTLAND!Ā Celtic break quickly as Paulo Bernardo plays a long ball over the top, and Nicolas-Gerrit Kuhn sprints away down the right and into the box. Jack Butland saves at the winger’s feet, and he gets up to block a tricky rebound attempt from Kyogo Furuhashi. Barely a minute later, Kyogo tries a half-volley from a narrow angle, but Butland saves comfortably.

6 mins:Ā Half a chance, there! Celtic don’t deal with James Tavernier’s long ball towards Hamza Igamane, and it drops for Ianis Hagi in the box. He tries to cut the ball back, but Kasper Schmeichel parries it, and the Hoops can clear. Nervy moment there for Brendan Rodgers and his players.

4 mins:Ā Rangers have started brightly here and made a couple if inroads in the Celtic half. No chances to speak of yet.

Kickoff: First half

Here we go!

3 mins before kickoff:Ā I think the kickoff will be delayed here. Smoke from flares in the stands means visibility is at a minimum right now. The players are keeping warm out there, but the referee is holding off on getting things started.

20 mins before kickoff:Ā The atmosphere in Hampden Park is… quite something. The Scottish winter is helping with that: it’s only just gone 3 p.m. local time, and the sun has already set.

1 hour before kickoff:Ā Celtic line up as expected, with the big news being that right-back Alistair Johnson is fit despite hurting his hip this week.Ā Rangers are without the injured John Souttar, so Leon Balogun partners Robin Propper at centre-back. Mohamed Diomande comes into midfield, with Nedim Bajrami and Ianis Hagi start behind striker Hamza Igamane, who had been a doubt after exhausting himself against Spurs.

1 hour 30 mins before kickoff:Ā It’s fair to say this one requires careful logistical planning. There has already been unverified footage suggesting possible clashes between fans in Glasgow city centre today.

2 hours before kickoff:Ā Christmas may be just 10 days away, but only one half of Glasgow will be in a party mood come the end of this game.
