Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell pulls off impossible in 4th quarter to rescue Cleveland vs. Heat

The statistic almost seems impossible.

Only one Cleveland Cavaliers player made a field goal for the first 11 minutes and 30 seconds of the fourth quarter on Wednesday night.

But because that player was a red-hot Donovan Mitchell, the Cavs won anyway.

While the rest of the Cavaliers started the frame 0-for-7 from the floor, Mitchell was 6-for-6. Those six makes included four from beyond the arc, and he had a free throw, for 17 fourth-quarter points.

Mitchell finished with 30 for the game, solidifying his place yet again as seventh all-time in playoff scoring average.

In the process, the superstar guard led Cleveland to a 2-0 series edge on the Heat. Mitchell has scored 30 points apiece in the two games to begin the first round of the playoffs.

Ironically, Mitchell’s first miss of the fourth quarter was the first make by someone else, as Darius Garland followed up a transition layup attempt on the other side of the rim for a putback.

Before that, it was all Mitchell. He got to his spots beyond the arc and couldn’t miss. He also floated in a tough shot near the bucket.

This is why the Cavs acquired Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz, and this is why the Cavs extended Mitchell for all the money they could.

He’s a true superstar, a legendary postseason scorer who knows how to rise to the occasion.

His 4-for-13 start on Wednesday night didn’t matter. Just that blistering, spotless stretch in the fourth quarter when Mitchell wrote another chapter to his ever-growing Cleveland storybook.
