Cardinals’ young slugger receives huge praise for defensive capabilities

There has not been much to write home about when it comes to the St. Louis Cardinals this season. With their 10-6 loss against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, they now sit 17.5 games out of first place in the National League Central.

However, that does not mean there have not been some good things to come from this season thus far. Masyn Winn has parlayed his stellar rookie season into a great sophomore season, especially with the glove.

Winn is currently leading National League shortstops with his .995 fielding percentage. Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter pegs him as the best defensive shortstop across Major League Baseball.

“Winn has the range and elite throwing arm to be a perennial Gold Glove contender and a cornerstone for the Cardinals in the years to come. The 23-year-old led all shortstops with 14 DFS as a rookie, and this year he is tops at the position in OAA (21) and FRV (16) while carrying a nearly pristine .995 fielding percentage.”

Winn has nearly been automatic with balls hit his way. He has been a huge addition to this club as they try and navigate this rebuild and return to their winning ways.

Mason Wynn’s teammates speak highly of the elite shortstop

Rueter is not the only one to praise Masyn Winn for his elite defensive skills. Brendan Donovan spoke highly of his teammate last week, stating he was one of the best he has ever seen, via John Denton.

“He’s one of the best defenders I have ever seen in my life,” Brendan said. “You can talk about the arm strength, the accuracy of his throws, the carry on his throws, the mental clock in his head, the instincts, the awareness to read swings and be in the right spots, his aggressiveness – his ability to do everything at a high level is incredibly impressive.”

Wynn can nearly do it all from the left side of the infield. He is an exciting player to watch and will continue to be a major cornerstone for this franchise moving forward.
