It was quite an eventful evening for St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras.
The 33-year-old went 1 for 4 with a home run in the Cardinals’ 8-5 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, but it wasn’t without a little drama to go along.
It started in the bottom of the third inning when Brewers’ third baseman Caleb Durbin collided with Contreras at first base on a groundout. Contreras appeared to step back towards the path of Durbin after making the putout, causing the collision.
Durbin and the Brewers’ dugout took exception to the incident, with first baseman Rhys Hoskins being particularly vocal towards Contreras, shouting at him from the first base dugout.
Contreras didn’t mince words when asked about his exchange with Hoskins after the game.
“One of their players, he liked to talk from far away, but then when he got in my face, didn’t say sh*t,” Contreras said postgame, per Jeff Jones of Belleville News-Democrat. “I was looking for more than that. He seems to be tougher. He’s a fu**ing p**sy. I’m not gonna name no names. He knows who he is.”
Contreras was also asked about Hoskins directly, and if anything was said between the two later on in the game.
“He didn’t say nothing to me. I was expecting for him to say something, but he was looking away already,” Contreras said. “Look at my face. Just say it to my face, whatever you say from the dugout. And he was looking away, just get off the base. I was like man, push me. He didn’t so it was good.”
Additionally, Contreras was later hit by a pitch in the fifth inning by Brewers pitcher Jose Quintana, who said after the game that it was not intentional.
