The St. Louis Cardinals will go into a three-game series without one of their top performers in 2025. First baseman Willson Contreras will miss his second straight game as he monitors a foot contusion, MLB.com‘s John Denton reported.
Contreras, 33, was hit by a pitch coming from pitcher Kyle Freeland in the Cardinals’ 3-0 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. Although St. Louis got a day off on Thursday, Contreras will be given another day of rest before returning to the lineup.
His absence for the Cardinals will be costly as Contreras leads the team in home runs (16). Through 114 games this season, the three-time All-Star has a .255 batting average, .344 on-base percentage, .443 slugging percentage, and a .787 OPS, and 65 RBI.
It’s a costly injury for the Cardinals while they continue to fight for an NL Wild Card spot this season. St. Louis is seeing their AL Central title hopes deplete as the Milwaukee Brewers are on a 12-game win streak and are 16 games ahead of the Cardinals.

After being a seller at the MLB trade deadline, fans and insiders thought the Cardinals would throw away this season and build for the future. This doesn’t seem to be the case, as St. Louis is just 3.5 games behind the struggling New York Mets for the last spot in the National League Wild Card.
The Cardinals will look to flip the script after a series loss to the Colorado Rockies during the week as they take on Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees in a three-game series over Players’ Weekend.
