Cardinals will consider trade for $81 million All-Star closer

The St. Louis Cardinals have been playing solid baseball as of late. They entered Wednesday’s game having won 13 of their last 16 games following a 14-19 start to 2025.

However, what they will do at the trade deadline is not certain. They are playing well enough to consider buying, but the roster is set up well for a sell-off.

Regardless, it’s too early to predict what they’ll do, but they’ll be an interesting team to watch.

Derrick Goold of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch states that St. Louis, regardless of where they are in the standings, will listen to offers for Ryan Helsley and Steven Matz.

“They’ll consider trades for Matz and Helsley, and those will be telling for what the team feels about its depth at those positions or the opportunity to contend,” Goold said in his weekly chat.

Goold notes that if the Cardinals fall out of contention, other players could become trade candidates.

Both Helsley and Matz are in the final year of their contracts, and Helsley in particular could bring back a haul.

He saved 49 games last year, setting a franchise record and earning National League Reliever of the Year honors.

Matz has remained healthy after three straight injury-plagued seasons, being used as a starter and a reliever. The Cardinals would be wise to consider trades for each pitcher.

The farm system is low on pitching, and it would make sense to try and replenish their stock. It will be interesting to see what direction they take.
