Cardinals trade idea sends $260 million Gold Glove to Cubs in unlikely proposal

The St. Louis Cardinals have not determined whether they will be buyers or sellers at this year’s trade deadline. Their current trajectory would seem to indicate that they are leaning towards buying.

However, nothing is set in stone. The season is still young, and the deadline isn’t until July 31.

Last offseason, St. Louis attempted to trade Nolan Arenado, but failed after Alex Bregman signed with the Boston Red Sox.

Garrett Kerman of Clutch Points proposed a wild trade idea that would involve St. Louis sending their star third baseman to the rival Chicago Cubs.

“For the Cubs, the fit is obvious. Their infield defense and offensive production at third base have lagged behind the rest of the roster, and adding Arenado would instantly transform a weakness into a strength,” Kerman notes.

This trade is incredibly unlikely, as two teams within the same division, let alone archrivals rarely make trades with one another.

The last major trade between St. Louis in Chicago came in 1964 when St. Louis acquired Hall-of-Famer Lou Brock in exchange for pitcher Ernie Broglio.

But sometimes, the unexpected happens at the trade deadline, and players go places that weren’t obvious fits.

But if the Cardinals do trade Arenado, his departure would open up a spot on the roster for prospect Thomas Saggese, and possibly more playing time for players such as Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker.

The Cardinals would have to go on a slide out of contention for them to even consider trading Arenado, but it will be interesting to see where things stand at the deadline.
