The St. Louis Cardinals are coming up on a very important offseason. There will be some big changes in the front office with Chaim Bloom taking over as the club’s new president of baseball operations.
He is tasked with turning this team around and getting fans back at Busch Stadium. He will have some tough decisions on who to keep around and what players could bring more value to the club by sending them elsewhere.
One of these players that Bloom will have to decide on is Nolan Arenado, whom the team tried to trade this season. Many speculate that he will be on the move this winter, but that is not a guarantee.
Cardinals’ star could stay put in St. Louis despite trade speculation
The Cardinals are focusing on their younger core, and Nolan Arenado is blocking some of those players’ development. He does not seem to be in the time frame of the team’s current plan, but that does not mean he will be gone next season.
St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold wrote about the situation. In it, he argues that Arenado could surprise everyone by sticking with the club through the winter.
“Arenado’s (trade) list is limited. And he’s been candid about how he has to play better to be more appealing to teams. Can that happen in the next few weeks, or will the Cardinals cover enough of his salary for a team to make that move? Those are real questions. And in the end, it’s possible that he prefers staying here to bouncing around to the unknown out there.”
This decision ultimately comes down to Arenado, who has a no-trade clause in his contract. This will be a situation that Cardinals fans will want to keep an eye on.
