The St. Louis Cardinals provided an unfortunate update on shortstop Masyn Winn late on Friday. Per Jeff Jones of the Belleview News-Democrat, Winn’s season is officially over, as his recovery from a meniscus tear has not gone well.
Winn was scratched from the lineup before Friday’s game, as he has been several times as he’s tried playing through the injury for quite some time. Thomas Saggese will now handle the bulk of the shortstop duties for the rest of the season.
Winn finishes the season batting .253 with nine home runs and a .673 OPS. Winn flashed the leather exceptionally well at shortstop this season, and will likely finish in the running for the NL Gold Glove award at the position. Winn accumulated a league-leading 22 outs above average at shortstop, per FanGraphs, and a 17 Fielding Run Value rating.
In his place will be Saggese, who has hit .251 with one home run and a .618 OPS this season. At 72-76, and with the Cardinals all but out of postseason contention, Saggese will finish out the season while Winn continues to recover.
In addition to being shut down, Winn will have arthroscopic surgery in the near future to repair damage to meniscus, per Derrick Goold of St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The team believes he will be ready for the 2026 season even after requiring surgery.
