The St. Louis Cardinals talked a big game about an organizational “reset” this past offseason, making it seem as if some veteran players would be traded.
Nothing has taken place for the Cardinals this offseason. They attempted to trade Nolan Arenado, but to no avail.
But as the offseason winds down and spring training kicks into gear, there might still be a chance St. Louis gets something done this winter.
According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals are at least open to trading right-hander Erick Fedde.
“What made Erick Fedde so appealing to the Cardinals at the trade deadline is what means he could be on the move again in the Cardinals want to trade now for the future,” Goold tweeted.
“Several teams believe the Cardinals are open to the move, and Fedde knows it’s possible.”
The Cardinals picked up Fedde in a trade with the Chicago White Sox last year at the deadline. In 31 starts with Chicago and St. Louis, the veteran right-hander went 9-9 with a 3.30 ERA over 177 1/3 innings pitched.
He is entering the final year of his contract and could certainly be traded at the deadline, if not now.
His bounce-back season and affordable contract could help the Cardinals bring back a decent package in exchange for him should they trade him.
In all likelihood, he won’t be back in 2026, so it makes sense for the Cardinals to at least shop him and see what they can get.
St. Louis badly needs to reset its roster and build for the future, and holding onto players on expiring contracts does not make sense as they prepare for what appears to be a bridge season in 2025.
We’ll see if they can find any takers for the right-hander.
