Cardinals manager could be on hot seat as ballclub transitions

The St. Louis Cardinals are playing much better baseball, having won five consecutive games and surged back to the .500 mark.

However, those wins have come at home. On the road, they are a completely different team, and not for the better. They could very easily fall back below .500 soon.

Manager Oli Marmol has been the subject of criticism among fans. He received a third-place vote for National League Manager of the Year honors last year, but fans still are skeptical.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report listed several managers that could be on the hot seat, and among them was Marmol.

“Though Marmol has deep roots in the Cardinals organization, he’s only 38 years old and the organization itself is in a state of flux,” Rymer writes. “It’s out in the open that 2025 is a transitional year for the Cardinals, particularly in that it’s a last hurrah for John Mozeliak before control of the front office passes to Chaim Bloom in 2026.”

Marmol led the Cardinals to an NL Central title in 2022, but the team went 71-91 in 2023 and missed the playoffs again in 2024 after finishing 83-79.

Marmol himself isn’t the root cause of all the Cardinals problems. Most issues can be traced back to ownership and Mozeliak.

However, he isn’t without fault, and if the Cardinals finish below .500 in 2025 and fall short of the postseason, then it is fair to wonder if Bloom will ultimately decide to pick his own manager for the 2026 team.

Former Cardinal Skip Schumaker might be available. St. Louis could also go with franchise legends Albert Pujols or Yadier Molina.

It will be interesting to see what Bloom decides to do this coming winter.
