Cardinals executive reveals key MLB trade deadline timeline

The MLB trade deadline is on the horizon and is less than one month away. With the deadline approaching, the baseball world waits in anticipation for the first trades to come through.

St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak, in a recent piece from Katie Woo, Patrick Mooney, Ken Rosenthal, and Will Sammon of The Athletic, revealed when he expects the trade deadline talks to pick up.

“The way the calendar is set up with the draft,” Mozeliak said, “There’s this sort of awkward (break). But, right after the draft, there will start to be a much more feverish pitch.”

MLB’s annual amateur draft, which is scheduled for Sunday, July 13th, and stretches to July 14th, is the key date for the MLB trade deadline. Once the draft is over, the baseball world will ramp up trade talks once again.

In the meantime, the front offices will focus on the draft, and while there might still be discussions, the trade talks won’t pick back up completely until after the draft is over.

Another way to view the comments from Mozeliak is that after the MLB draft and the All-Star break, the trade market will pick up steam. There are plenty of teams on the cusp of selling, holding, or buying at this year’s deadline.

As the deadline approaches, a lot more will be known about which teams are selling or not. Ironically, Mozeliak’s Cardinals are one of the most important teams at the deadline.

With teams waiting to see how the rest of July unfolds for the Cardinals, St. Louis could either be buyers by the end of July or be ready to sell based on their performance.

But, as Mozeliak mentions, the trade talks will hit a lull during the All-Star break, with the MLB draft kicking off the All-Star week festivities on Sunday, July 13th. After July 15th, the baseball world will be back in business for the trade deadline.

St. Louis and the rest of the baseball world will be waiting until after the draft to pick trade talks back up, in what could be a very entertaining MLB trade deadline.
