Cardinals encouraged to call up top prospect after hot start

The St. Louis Cardinals have begun to play better baseball as of late. Whether that affects their trade deadline strategy is unknown at the moment.

However, they are back to .500 after a five-game winning streak and will look for more this weekend against the Washington Nationals. Still, some members of the team are struggling, and a Nolan Arenado trade isn’t impossible.

Both Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker are struggling, and their runway may be thin soon.

Zach Pressnell of FanSided noted that top prospect Thomas Saggese needs playing time, and sooner or later, the Cardinals are going to have to have him on the Major League roster.

“Right now, the Cardinals don’t have a spot in the lineup for one of their best prospects because Arenado is the everyday third baseman. Once the Cardinals can move him, they’ll free up a spot for infielder Thomas Saggese to see everyday innings.”

Trading Arenado would open up third base for Saggese, or the Cardinals could move Gorman there, put Saggese at second base and Brendan Donovan in the outfield.

The 23-year-old top prospect is hitting .341/.364/.512 with a home run, seven RBI and an .876 OPS in limited time. He has power from the right side of the plate and is a solid utility infielder.

There is little more he can do in the minors, especially with Gorman and Walker struggling. He could give the lineup a much-needed boost if he plays every day.

It will be interesting to see how the Cardinals roster looks in the coming weeks.
