Cardinals could shop $15.5 million veteran starter at trade deadline

The St. Louis Cardinals were struggling a bit in the month of June until they pulled off a clean three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox.

They return home for a crucial set of games with a 40-35 record, and they are just a half-game back of the third National League Wild Card spot.

However, this does not mean that they won’t be selling at all at the trade deadline. That is still very much on the table.

Katie Woo of The Athletic notes that right-hander Erick Fedde could be a trade candidate.

“If they sell, it will likely involve players on expiring deals. The Cardinals indeed could shop Fedde, who is in the final season of his $7.5 million contract, to make room for [Michael] McGreevy in the rotation, but only if they feel comfortable with their pitching depth,” Woo wrote on Friday.

St. Louis has McGreevy waiting in the wings and under contract for several more years. Fedde is in the final year of his contract and likely won’t be back in 2026.

The right-hander had a career year last year and came to St. Louis from the White Sox. This year, he is 3-6 with a 3.54 ERA in 15 starts with the Cardinals.

But as a rental starting pitcher, he could bring back a solid return if St. Louis sells. If 2024 was any indication, then the Cardinals could receive something good in return for him.

They also would be clearing up a spot for McGreevy in the rotation. But if they aren’t comfortable with their pitching depth, Fedde could be kept through the 2025 season.

It will certainly be interesting to see what St. Louis decides to do with the 32-year-old veteran.
