Cardinals could send $260 million All-Star to Dodgers after Max Muncy injury

The St. Louis Cardinals find themselves in a unique position as the trade deadline draws near. They are in the postseason race, but aren’t sure whether they will buy, sell, or hold at the deadline.

There are several different paths they could take this summer. The deadline takes place on July 31.

They tried all offseason long to trade third baseman Nolan Arenado, but after he declined a trade to the Houston Astros and the Boston Red Sox signed Alex Bregman, St. Louis held onto him.

Chris Landers of FanSided notes however that after Max Muncy’s injury, the Los Angeles Dodgers could use some help at third base.

“On paper, at least, St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado would seem to check a lot of boxes. He’s an eight-time All-Star and future Hall of Famer, for starters, and he remains one of the better defenders at the position in the entire league,” Landers wrote.

Arenado is a native of Southern California and was nearly traded to the Dodgers in 2023. St. Louis chose to hold onto their star third baseman then as well.

If St. Louis were to trade him, third base would be opened up for either Nolan Gorman or Thomas Saggese, though they would be losing arguably the best defensive third baseman in the league.

With the Cardinals in contention, a trade of Arenado seems unlikely at the moment. However, if they fall out of the race, then it becomes a possibility.

The Dodgers are going to be without Muncy for at least six weeks, and it wouldn’t hurt for them to add some help at the third base position.

Ultimately, it depends on how St. Louis fares in the month of July. We’ll see if an Arenado trade comes to pass.
