Cardinals could cut ties with Erick Fedde, remain in postseason picture

The St. Louis Cardinals are outplaying expectations this season and are looking like a postseason contender. They currently have the last Wild Card spot in the National League and are not far behind the Chicago Cubs for the division lead.

The Cardinals still have some expiring contracts that they may try to trade, but that does not necessarily mean they will be giving up on the season. FanSided’s Zach Pressnell suggested the team could trade Erick Fedde and still make a postseason run.

“Fedde’s contract ends at the conclusion of the season and it’s unlikely the Cardinals will re-sign him in the offseason,” wrote Pressnell. “Instead, St. Louis could capitalize on his stretch of hot starts to land a solid return for the expiring pitcher. In his place, the Cardinals could look to call up a prospect like Quinn Mathews or Tink Hence when they’re fully healthy and back in the swing of things. They could also call up Michael McGreevy to fill a hole left by a trade of Fedde.”

Fedde has a 3.90 ERA this season and has made 11 starts. He signed a two-year, $15 million deal with the White Sox last offseason, but ended up getting traded to the Cardinals. He had a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts before being traded and a 3.72 ERA in 10 starts afterward.

He could be a useful piece for any contender, and trading him would allow the Cardinals to call up some talented pitchers and add for the future as well.

“Either way, St. Louis could land a few key prospects in exchange for Fedde, especially because there are a lot of teams looking for a starting pitcher,” wrote Pressnell. “In the end, the team might get better right now by trading Fedde and replacing him with a prospect, but they’ll definitely get better for the future. The return of prospects, even if it’s two or three mid level guys, would provide good depth and upside for the Cardinals’ farm system.”
