Alex Ovechkin is only a hat trick away now.
The Capitals star’s goal Tuesday against the Bruins put him at 891 for his career, three short of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record.
Ovechkin is now in a realistic position to reach the magic number of 894 in a single game. He has 32 career hat tricks, including two this season — most recently Feb. 23 against the Oilers.
His next chance to close the gap is Wednesday at the Hurricanes, a tough back-to-back against a playoff-bound team. Ovechkin scored once in a 4-2 Caps loss in Raleigh in November, back when it still didn’t quite seem realistic that he would approach Gretzky’s mark this year.
Now, he’s on the doorstep. Here’s everything you need to know to watch two Stanley Cup contenders clash with NHL history on the line.
